About temperature scales

Temperature conversions differ from every other category on this site: the scales don’t share a zero point, so converting means scaling and shifting. Celsius puts water’s freezing point at 0° and boiling at 100°. Fahrenheit, used mainly in the United States, puts them at 32° and 212°. Kelvin starts at absolute zero (−273.15 °C) and is the SI base unit used throughout science.

The relations are exact by definition: K = °C + 273.15, and °F = °C × 9⁄5 + 32. A handy sanity check: −40° is the one temperature where Celsius and Fahrenheit agree.

Quick reference

  • Water freezes: 0 °C = 32 °F = 273.15 K
  • Body temperature: 37 °C = 98.6 °F
  • Water boils: 100 °C = 212 °F = 373.15 K
