How to convert inches to millimeters

This is one of the rare conversions with zero approximation in it: 1 inch = 25.4 millimeters exactly, by international definition since 1959. Every result you get from the factor is exact, never an estimate.

1. Write down the length in inches, turning any fractions into decimals first.
2. Multiply by 25.4.
3. Keep the full result — nothing needs rounding, though you can trim trailing digits for readability.

Because the factor is exact, converted dimensions can be chained through further calculations without accumulating error — a genuine advantage in precision work.

Suppose you are having a standard photo print framed by a European supplier who works in metric. The short side converts as 8 × 25.4 = 203.2 mm, and the 10 in long side equals 254 mm — the two numbers the framer actually needs on the order.

What is an inch?

An inch is one twelfth of a foot in the imperial and US customary systems, and since the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement it has carried an exact metric value of 25.4 mm. It remains the working unit of American daily life — screens, waistbands, plywood, pipe fittings — and it follows US products around the world wherever they set the standard.

What is a millimeter?

The millimeter is the metric world’s precision workhorse: a thousandth of the SI meter, specified through the BIPM’s SI Brochure. Manufacturing, medicine, and construction outside the United States all dimension in millimeters, largely because the unit is fine enough that real-world lengths land on tidy whole numbers with no fractions required.

When you’ll need inches to mm

• 3D printing and CAD: slicers and most model-exchange formats assume millimeters, so a bracket you sketched at 2.5 in has to be modeled as 63.5 mm before it will print at the right size.
• Sheet materials across markets: matching imperial stock at a metric supplier means knowing that nominal 0.5 in plywood corresponds to 12.7 mm thickness.
• Screen and furniture fit: a 42 in television measures 1066.8 mm on the diagonal — the number that decides whether it fits a wall niche dimensioned in millimeters.
• Sending drawings overseas: a machinist working metric will re-dimension your 12 in part as 304.8 mm, and supplying that figure up front is the cheapest way to prevent translation mistakes.
• Fastener crossover: mixed tool sets make more sense once you notice that a 0.5 in drive equals 12.7 mm — the half-inch and 12.7 mm sockets in your box are one and the same.
