A worked example from the sewing table: a quilt pattern published in the US calls for 7.5 in blocks, but your cutting mat is ruled in metric. Multiply 7.5 by 2.54 and you get 19.05 cm — the line to cut along.

What is an inch?

In the United States, the inch is the default unit for nearly everything smaller than a room: screens, waists, nails, photo prints, rainfall. • Framing photo prints abroad. A standard 10 in print measures 25.4 cm, so you can match it to metric frame sizes at any European or Asian shop rather than hunting for imported frames.
• Following US craft and woodworking plans with metric tools. Plans written in inches meet rulers, mats, and saw fences ruled in centimeters constantly; converting each dimension once with the exact 2.54 factor keeps a whole project consistent.
