• Translating European recipes for American kitchens. When a British baking book calls for 200 g of sugar, that is 7.0548 oz; 150 g of butter reads 5.2911 oz on a US kitchen scale.
• Weighing small valuables. A 5 g gold pendant registers 0.1764 oz on an ordinary scale — but remember that bullion dealers price by the troy ounce, a separate unit, so never mix the two when valuing metal.
