What is a centimeter?

• Precision DIY and hardware runs. The mental shortcut of calling 2.5 cm an inch drifts quickly: 2.5 cm is really 0.9843 in. For drill bits, bolts, and anything with tight tolerances, use the full factor rather than the approximation.
• Matching bakeware and cookware to US recipes. Metric tins and skillets are labeled in centimeters while American recipes assume inches, so a quick multiplication by 0.393701 settles whether your pan matches the one in the instructions.
